On July 28, 2005, the Springfield arts community mourned the passing of John Smarelli, one of its most revered and respected members. Now through a generous gift from the Ruth B. and Thomas F. Mackey Charitable Trust, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra has ensured that his legacy will be shared for generations to come.
For over sixty years, Springfield Youth Symphony Conductor Emeritus and SSO Concertmaster Emeritus, John Smarelli was active as a performer in a five state area and as concertmaster for many prominent performers in show business. He was a member of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra for forty-two years, serving many years as concertmaster and personnel manager. A conductor of the Springfield Youth Symphony for eight years, John Smarelli is fondly remembered by Springfield Youth Symphony alumni for his passionate approach to music, and his demand for hard work and perfection.
In memory of Mr. Smarelli's passion and commitment to the Symphony, the John Smarelli Scholarship Fund of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra has been established by the Springfield Symphony Orchestra. This fund of the Springfield Foundation will be used to award college scholarships for deserving high school seniors who have participated in Springfield Youth Orchestras and will major or minor in music.
