Mina Hadley
An unsung hero.
A Springfield Native, Mina McIntire Hadley (1911-1988) lived modestly and enjoyed simple pleasures. She was an avid reader who also enjoyed needlework and painting. She and her husband John had one child, Joan, who was born with cerebral palsy. After John’s premature death, Mina continued to care for their daughter at home until Joan died in her early 40s. Mina died in 1988.
Survived by a few cousins, she left much of her estate to the Foundation. She specified that the income from her designated fund is to be used to benefit the Springfield Rotary Club’s programs for disabled children – among them is its annual Christmas party. This holiday tradition features a festive meal, entertainment, and of course a visit from Santa Claus, who delivers a gift specially selected for each child in attendance.
Inspired by her daughter’s disability she is an Unsung Hero to hundreds of children annually.
