William S. and Mary M. Haynes
Outspoken for education.
After William Haynes sold his pharmacy business in Toledo, he and his wife Mary, moved to Springfield. Shortly after they arrived, Mary was employed by the Springfield City Schools as a cook, an occupation she loved because it brought her close to the children whom she adored.
In 1987, at the age of 73, Mary retired so she could take care of her ailing husband who was suffering from Parkinson’s. Mary has been described by her friends as “political and rather outspoken” about a number of issues, not the least of which was the City Schools.
Mary passed away in June of 2008 and while she is gone physically, her voice will continue to be heard. However, this time it will be through the scholarship fund she established at the suggestion of a close friend as a way to continue to be a champion for kids.
